Electropol Festival 2016 / 20.8.2016

Electropol Festival presents ten hours of electronic music on two stages at Lifepark, from EDM to techno and deep house, on August 20. This is the first time that Electropol has moved from Maslak Arena to Lifepark, moving into Istanbul’s northern forest for a unique festival experience that blends with nature. Look out for names such as Showtek, Blasterjaxx, Bassjackers, and Mark Knight.

Ethnosport Culture Festival / 26.8.2016

The Ethnosport Culture Festival, taking place in Bezirganbahçe Square in Küçükçekmece, is an international display of traditional Turkic sports taking place from August 26-28. Athletes from Turkey and the Turkic republics, such as Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan, will play ancient games such as oil wrestling, horseback archery, horseback javelin throwing, and the Turkic war game gökbörü. The event will also feature Central Asian music, traditional food, and an Ottoman military mehter band. This event is entirely free and open to the public.

Tarkan / 03.09.3016

Turkish superstar Tarkan is performing six concerts at Harbiye Open-Air Concert Hall, on September 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, and 10. His most recent album Ahde Vefa was comprised of songs from the repertoire of Turkish classical music, which ranges from Ottoman music up to the modern day. The first half of these concerts will focus on the classical side, while the second half will be filled with his famous pop hits.

Armin van Buuren – Armin Only Embrace / 30.09.2016

Legendary Dutch DJ Armin van Buuren is bringing his solo tour Armin Only Embrace to Istanbul on 30 September at Life park. As a DJ, radio host, producer, and label owner, Armin is at the forefront of the global trance scene and electronic dance music as a whole. His role as a musical ambassador has made him the first solo electronic artist to play Madison Square Garden, and he has also performed for the King and Queen of the Netherlands. Armin’s latest album “Embrace” takes in influences from jazz, rock, and singer-songwriters while keeping the infectious dance sound that has made him world-famous.

Istanbul Talks – Agriculture / 13.10.2016

19th International Puppet Festival / 15.-30.10.2016

Istanbul’s International Puppet Festival is returning for its 19th year from October 15-30. The traditional Turkish shadow plays of Hacıvat and Karagöz are the inspiration behind this festival, which draws puppet acts from all the continents, each displaying their own local styles and heritage. This year around 20 acts will be coming from Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Holland, Italy, Hungary, Singapore, Greece, and Turkey. Festival organizer Cengiz Özek is recognized by UNESCO as a bearer of the Karagöz shadow play’s intangible cultural heritage, with decades of performance and playwriting behind him.

Tony Allen – Tribute to Art Blakey / 19.10.2016

Nigeria-born percussionist Tony Allen will pay tribute to legend Art Blakey, one of the most famous jazz drummers and bandleaders, at Babylon Bomonti. Allen was one of the pioneers of Afrobeat, working with Fela Kuti to develop the sound that has achieved such popularity. Brian Eno has said that Allen is perhaps the finest drummer alive today. The full lineup is: drums – Tony Allen, saxophone – Jowee Omicil, piano – Jean-Philippe Dary, double bass – Matthias Allamane.

Ron Carter Golden Striker Trio / 20.10.2016

Multiple Grammy-award winning jazz bassist Ron Carter is performing as part of a trio at Zorlu PSM on October 20. His most famous collaboration being with Miles Davis as part of his quintet, Carter has also performed and recorded with Tommy Flanagan, Bill Evans, Dexter Gordon, B. B. King, and Kronos Quartet in his long and varied career. The lineup is Ron Carter on double bass, Donald Vega on piano, and Russel Malone on guitar.

Imany / 21.10.2016

Imany takes inspiration from her idols Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, and Tracie Chapman, and the traditions of soul, funk, and folk music that nourished their music. Her compositions for the film Sous Les Jupes Les Filles (French Women) reached over 1.5 million cinemagoers, and her songs achieve tones of hope and melancholy while touching on the vital issues of the day. See her at Volkswagen Arena on October 21.
