European Capital of Sports Istanbul

Istanbul has been selected as European Capital of Sports for 2012 by The European Capitals of Sport Association (ACES).

Being the home of five football teams playing in the National Premier League, with continuous improvement of the infrastructure and sports facilities on the road to the competition of the Olympic Games and hosting many other significant sports events already, such as Formula 1, Moto GP and 2010 World Basketball Championship, this new title will bring a series of whole new sports events to the city.

"European Capital of Sport aims to make everybody, young and old, interested in sports and increase communication between European cities." said Egemen Bagis, Turkey's chief EU Negotiator, while receiving the certificate for the title from ACES.

Some of the sports events that will take place throughout 2012 in Istanbul are:

Casa dell'Arte Residency Program Spring 2012

Casa dell'Arte Artists in Residence Program aims to provide an alternative platform for artistic production, collaboration and exhibition in the Eastern Mediterranean region by making the resources of Casa dell'Arte in Bodrum available to visual artists. The residency program is held twice a year, in spring and autumn, with the participation of 5 artists and 1 curator for a period of 6 weeks. At the end of this period an exhibition is held at Casa dell'Arte Hotel of Arts & Leisure in Bodrum, prior to a general exhibition in Istanbul. A yearly publication documenting the program and the artworks is published in autumn with contributions from resident curator and artists.

The program also aims to develop a public outreach through the involvement of artists with the local community through an individual or a collaborative project. While each artist is required to have a project proposal in the beginning, we strongly encourage their interaction with the local setting and experimentation with alternative materials and or ideas that may emerge during the residency.

As announced in the spring, Lycian Way Ultra Marathon took place twice by Ministry of Culture and Tourism in Turkey and Argos Culture and Art Center, first on 9-17 October 2010 and second on 24 September - 2 October 2011.

It is now announced by Argos Culture and Art Center that "Runfire Cappadocia Ultra Marathon" will take place on 7-15 July 2012 in Cappadocia region.

Hierapolis – Works inside the basilica

The tomb of Saint Philip, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus, was discovered in the ancient city of Hierapolis, in Pamukkale, Turkey. Pamukkale, widely known with the travertines and its natural beauty started to stand out with its antiquities as well.

Excavation works in Pamukkale Hierapolis ancient city led by Prof. Dr. Francesco D’Andria from Lecce University in Italy unearthed the tomb of Saint Philip, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus.

D’Andria’s team has been carrying out excavation works in Hierapolis for 30 years, in order to comprehend the changes that the city had gone through from the age of Roman Empire to that of Byzantium when it had become an important centre of pilgrimage.

The excavation that started in July focusing on the area where the tomb was discovered has had significant discoveries in 1 month. The unearthed tomb belongs to St. Philip who was one of the 12 apostles of Jesus and who got killed by the Romans when he came to Hierapolis to spread Christianity.

The tomb of St. Philip which is also mentioned in the Bible has great importance for Christians, its archeology and cultural tourism.

The tomb, discovered partially thanks to satellite views, was thought to have been located near the martyrdom of St. Philip. It is indicated that no tomb was found as a result of the excavation in martyrdom area, and that about a month ago, a new church ruin was discovered about 40 metres away from the St. Philip Church; the new excavation that took place at that point resulted in the discovery of the tomb. D’Andria, the head of the excavation, explained that they determined the transfer of the tomb from St. Philip Church to the newly found area in the 5. century, in Byzantium time.

It is expected that other important results are to be received with the development of the excavation on process.
